With the successful operation of its geothermal heating plant, the municipality of Champigny - in the Southeast of Paris/ France - is now planning to drill a second well and to extend the heating network to provide geothermal heat to additional 4,000 homes by as early as 2023.

As reported this morning, the geothermal heating project at Champigny in the Southeast of Paris/ France – already equipped with a geothermal well that heats the equivalent of 7,200 homes, is planning to drill another well in 2020 to extend its service.

This was announced during a visit by Marie-Hélène Magne, Vice-President of the Territory in charge of the climate plan, to the geothermal plant of Champigny.

François Cocq, Deputy Mayor of Champigny, and President of the Public geothermal company (EPCG), has unveiled the second well project. The work on the project could begin in 2020 and is expected to provide heat to about 4,000 homes as early as 2023

“Coming here allows us to better understand what is being done because geothermal energy is not thatwidespread in our territory, but it is an interesting technology and a significant source of energy,” says Marie-Hélène Magne (SE ), first assistant in Charenton and vice-president of Paris Est Marne et Bois.

Key information:

  • 1985 – Start of the geothermal heating network
  • 30 % saving on heating costs for customers to geothermal energy in Champigny.
  • 7,200 housing units are now heated and supplied with hot water by the geothermal well of Chennevières.
  • The equivalent of 4,000 will be heated by the new well.
  • 13,000 t CO2 equivalent are saved each year thanks to the Champigny geothermal network.

Among the 13 municipalities, three cities have a central boiler for many homes: Champigny, Maisons-Alfort and Fontenay. The future climate plan of the territory should be voted in the first quarter of 2019 and will include measures for 6 years. Assistance with heat networks could be included.

At Champigny, where about 20,000 inhabitants are heated thanks to this plant, the project of the second well is well advanced. Next week, the EPCG board of directors will evaluate the installation of the well on part of the René Rousseau stadium, without impact on the use of the equipment. “At first the equivalent of 5,000 homes would be connected, donors are already interested, rejoices François Cocq. We have already planned equipment to connect, when the well will be ready, the future school Simone Veil or Lucie Aubrac college. ”

The second well will initially serve the Garden Cities, Stalingrad Boulevard and all around, then the service could be extended to the city center and town hall. This equipment, which requires an investment of about EUR20 million ($25 million), will remain totally public, as is the first well in Champigny.
