The Ministry of Commerce of Zambia has encouraged the success of the Kalahari geothermal project in the Bweengwa district and is hoping that it will foster the growth of a new industrial park

During a tour of the stands at the Southern Province Tourism and Investment Exposition, Commerce Minister of Zambia Christopher Yaluma urged the Monze Town council to ensure that the benefits of the Kalahari geothermal project are realized.

Dr. Moses Banda, Director of Kalahari Geo Energy, says that their company will start with pilot power generation at the Bweengwa project by 2020. According to Banda, their company has already spent over $7 million, which expected to increase to $10 million by the time pilot generation plant has been set up.

Incidentally, the province’s first ever industrial park will also be located in the district and will rely on the utilization of geothermal energy.

“Let’s make the project work.” said Yaluma. “This is a good project for the community of Bweengwa and Monze as whole. As government we want to see this project materialize and we want you to make sure that it does. So Monze you have a lot of work to do and we are with you.”

Jack Deka, Socio-Economic Planner of the Monze Town Council, has said that they are proud to be associated with the geothermal project. By bringing in new business opportunities, the project has good potential to improve the lives of local people.
