The Governor of the State of Hawaii is trying to bolster the adoption of geothermal by local residents after some discrepancies from neighbours over a new HELCO geothermal plant being planned to be built.

In a recent piece in West Hawaii Today, Governor of the State of Hawaii, Neil Abercrombie is quoted, saying that “hopes to see Hawaii Island residents end the debate and embrace geothermal energy as an important resource for the state’s future energy needs.

“I realize that there’s been discussion and interest and varying views, but with respect to the utilization (of geothermal), I hope that conversation can come to a quick conclusion,” he said.“If there is anything on Earth, or in Earth, that says to us as a species, as stewards of this planet, that here is a resource for your utilization and for your proper regard, and to be a steward of, it’s geothermal,” he added. “And the Big Island could not be better situated for it.”

These remarks follow the recent controversy with the Hawaii Electric Light Co. (HELCO) to build a new 50MW plant that has met with the opposition of the local residents citing their concern with health risks yet the installation of said plant would reduce the island’s dependency on fossil fuels.

Last month utility Hawaii Electric Light Co., has now announced a new time plan for the development of a potential new geothermal plant for the state, as reported by ThinkGeoEnergy.
