Algerian agricultural start-up to implement geothermal energy to extend greenhouse growing season.

A new agricultural start-up is planning to use geothermal energy for the heating of greenhouses in the commune of Mégarine, north of Ouargla, by the end of 2017. This pilot complex is an international partnership between The National Office for Irrigation and Drainage (ONID), and the Spanish company Alcantara Systems. The greenhouses will extend the growing season for many of the fruits and vegetables that are grown for export.

Along with the expansive greenhouse complex there will be a nursery dedicated to the production of high quality seedlings, with a germination chamber according to the project technical sheet. The project is expected to generate about one hundred jobs, at the rate of 10 jobs per hectare of greenhouse, said the officials of the municipality of Mégarine.
