Husum, Germany receives state funding for geothermal feasibility study
The local utility company of Husum, Germany, has received state funding support to study the feasibility of deep geothermal utilization for heating.
Stadtwerke Husum GmbH, the local utility company of the city of Husum in Schleswig-Holstein, Germany has received a grant of EUR 152,000 to finance a feasibility study for deep geothermal energy. This is the first funding awarded from the municipal heat fund of the Ministry for Energy Transition, Climate Protection, Environment and Nature (MEKUN) of Schleswig-Holstein, which was established in 2025.
“We thank the state of Schleswig-Holstein for the funding, which significantly advances our project and thus our plans for a climate-friendly heat supply for Husum,” said Benn Olaf Kretschmann, Managing Director of Stadtwerke Husum.
The utility company has been actively investigating the potential for deep geothermal energy for heat supply in Husum since 2024, following the granting of a two-year exploration permit by the Lower Saxony State Authority for Mining, Energy and Geology (LBEG). This permit gives the utilities the right and authority to explore the deep geothermal potential in the area around Husum, between Hattstedt in the northwest and Mildstedt in the southeast.
The permit was extended for another two years until February 2028 at the beginning of this year. Since March 2024, the energy provider has also had access to the results of a preliminary study that confirms the deep geothermal potential in Husum and shows that further investigations are worthwhile.
With the grant now secured, Stadtwerke Husum can commission a specialized service provider to conduct the feasibility study. If everything goes according to plan, the company expects the results of the study to be available to the utility in the fourth quarter of 2026.
Matthias Forthmann, who heads the deep geothermal project, however clarifies that it will take some time before any exploratory drilling takes place, assuming the feasibility study produces positive results. Operational plans will have to be drawn up, reviewed by authorities, and reviewed.
