The energy regulator for the province of Alberta, Canada is seeking to fill a position of Senior Scientist, Geothermal Resources in Edmonton, Alberta.

The Alberta Energy Regulator is seeking to hire a Senior Scientist, geothermal resources in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.  The position is a full-time, yet limited term for 12-months.

The Alberta Geological Survey (AGS) branch of the Alberta Energy Regulator (AER) ensures that subsurface resources are identified, characterized, and quantified for all Albertans. The AGS is embarking on a multi-year geoscience study to conduct a province-wide geothermal energy resource appraisal. This research study will take an interdisciplinary approach to further quantify Alberta’s geothermal resource potential and publish our results using information, data, and knowledge products. Geothermal favourability of Alberta’s subsurface will be assessed at various scales utilizing existing data, collecting new information, and also characterizing geological formations, groundwater systems, and depleted oil and gas reservoirs for their suitability of low-, medium-, and high-temperature geothermal potential.

The Senior Scientist, Geothermal Resources position will apply advanced knowledge of, geological, geophysical, and geothermal resource principles and practices for the AGS/AER. This role will primarily focus on providing knowledge and skills to support the conceptual understanding and characterization of geothermal reservoirs in the Western Canada Sedimentary Basin. Products generated will be foundational for subsurface characterization necessary to support this multi-year study and development of geothermal energy regulation in Alberta. The individual will provide high-level technical assurance and mentorship in their area of expertise to staff within the AGS to aid in delivery of the AGS Geothermal Program. This role will also provide support in growing our relationships with collaborators, partners and internal and external stakeholder engagement related to geothermal resources in Alberta. The individual will work under limited supervision of results and solve problems by drawing from prior experience, collaborations with others, and analysis of issues that often require a broad scientific understanding. The Senior Scientist, Geothermal Resources will be a part of the innovative, collaborative, and multi-disciplinary Modelling & Resources team which contains hydrogeologists, geologists, geostatisticians, modellers and data scientists that support programs and mandates across AGS and AER.
