Kenya's national power company Kenya Electricity Generating Company (KenGen) appointed today Albert Mugo as new Managing Director for the utility.

Kenya Electricity Generating Company (KenGen) appoints Albert Mugo as new Managing Director. He started his assignment effective today.

In a statement, Albert Mugo said that “he will focus on capacity expansion and fast-tracking geothermal generation during his tenure.” Albert Mugo was picked from a list of 10 contenders.

“Mugo’s immediate assignment will be to complete the 280MW of geothermal power plants in order to help the country reduce reliance on expensive thermal power and weather dependent hydro power generation.

Mugo is expected to spearhead efforts to help Kenya increase electricity generation  from current 1,700MW to 5000MW within 36 months.

“Mr Mugo has been in charge of business development and strategy at KenGen up to his appointment. He had topped the interview list of candidates. Director, Finance and Commercial John Mudany ranked second.

Albert Sigei, the vice-president of business support and ready mix operations at the Nigerian branch of Lafarge, the French-based multi-national cement conglomerate, was ranked third.

The board, then headed by Titus Mbathi, handed their report to the Cabinet Secretary in July last year following the expiry of Eddy Njoroge’s term. The board recommended Mugo, citing his performance in his current duties and for continuity as he has been in charge of multibillion-shilling projects.”

His appointment comes at a time when the government has focused its efforts to reduce the cost of electricity up by to 40%.

Mugo said he would focus on adding 7000MW of power in the next 3 years.

He plans to expand his reach to explore other channels such as coal and liquid gas as new ways to provide electricity.

Already 8 drilling rigs are operating in Olkaria  to raise 360MW of power in the next three years inline with the country’s agenda of raising 50,000MW of power by 2030.”
