Following the successful inauguration of the 280MW project at the Olkaria geothermal plant, KenGen has ambitious plans aiming at building another geothermal facility in three years and adding 700MW to the national grid.

Kenya has been doing very significant advances in geothermal development in the last few years and KenGen has been spearheading this development in the Olkaria geothermal field.

According to local news sources, KenGen’s managing director Albert Mugo says that his company is “fast-tracking projects to increase power production.”

Geothermal is allowing for lower electricity prices in the country by phasing out costly diesel generators and the need to import costly fossil fuel.

The same source states that “Kengen has identified power sources in Olkaria with a potential of producing 1,000MW, but only 440MW has been developed so far. He said the company will partner with the private sector to finance the Olkaria VI projects.”

“The first step is to send expression of interest invites from potential bidders then issue a request for proposal for those who offer the best value,” Mugo said.
