Recent studies determine a geothermal power capacity potential of up to 67 MW at Apas in Tawau District in Sabah, Malaysia.

News from Malaysia report that “studies regarding the electricity generation potential of up to 67 MW from geothermal resources discovered at a geothermal site in Apas, has been completed, said deputy Natural Resources and Environment Minister Tan Sri Joseph Kurup.

Kurup said although a study by the Mineral and Geosciences Department was not a detailed one, the technical aspects indicate that geothermal site in Apas, Tawau, has the potential to generate enough electricity to cater for the need of the Tawau people.

“We have conducted a study and will make recommendations to the state government. It is up to the state government to find the experts to develop the site,” said Kurup who is also the president of Parti Bersatu Rakyat Sabah (PBRS) after accepting 515 application forms from opposition members here Monday.

The study also found a reservoir about 2,000 to 3,000m below the earth’s surface with water at temperatures of 220 to 236 degrees Celsius which was more than enough heat to generate electricity, he said after visiting the site.”
