Emerging Power Inc. (EPI) expects its 40 MW Montelago geothermal power project in in Oriental Mindoro, Philippines to start operation in the first quarter of 2017.

As part of a comprehensive electrification program directed by outgoing President Aquino in the Philippines, Oriental Mindoro Electric Cooperative (ORMECO) yhas been able to connect a total of 11,412 households to the main electricity grid from 2012 to 2015.

Engineer Patrocinio M. Panagsagan, Jr., general manager of ORMECO, in his report during the electric cooperative’s 34th annual general assembly held in Calapan and Gloria recently, said that in 2015 alone, a total of 135 sitios were successfully connected to the grid, bringing a total of 2,271 household connections while in 2014, the household connections were relatively higher at 3,005 in 244 sitios.

Emerging Power Inc. is one of the companies working on providing much needed electricity for Oriental Mindoro and is on track with the development of its 40 MW Montelago geothermal porject.

 

The project is one of four IPPs for the Mindoro provinces, that have already secured their own power supply agreement that, if completed would make the island take off from its dependency on the National Power Corporation’s plant.

The $187-million Emerging Power Inc.-owned Montelago Geothermal Power plant, which could provide 4,835.52 MWh per month will become active in the first quarter of 2017 while the Catwiran mini-hydro power plant which has a dependable capacity of 4.4 MW has set its commercial operation date in January 2017, giving the two provinces enough energy sources for household and commercial consumers.
