The city of Nysa in Poland has signed a contract with Algeo for exploration geothermal drilling, which is expected to start by spring 2026.

The City of Nysa in Poland has signed a contract with drilling company Algeo for the drilling of an exploration geothermal well. Preparation of the drilling site will take about six months and the drilling operations is expected to commence by Spring 2026.

Nysa was one of the localities selected to receive funding support for geothermal exploration under the “Provision of thermal waters in Poland” program. About 19 million PLN (approx. USD 5.3 million) has been allocated from the fund for the city. The drilling seeks to validate the potential of the geothermal resources beneath the city and help assess the commercial feasibility of the incident. The well will be drilled to a depth of around 2000 meters.

Kordian Kolbiarz, Mayor of Nysa, stated that geothermal has the potential to supply heating and hot water for the city’s heating network. It can also be used to enhance the Frajda swimming pool. Geothermal can complement the city’s efforts to develop local resources to boost the local economy, in addition to an eco-heating plant and a municipal photovoltaic farm.

It’s worth emphasizing that the Nysa Municipality is becoming a pioneer in the region in implementing projects that will bring enormous benefits to Nysa’s residents and the environment in the future ,” added City Secretary Piotr Bobak.

Poland currently has ten operational geothermal heating plants, with the Konin facility the latest to officially start operations. Geothermal exploration drilling is also ongoing in several locations simultaneously (Blonie and Konskie, for instance) supported largely by a national fund under the Ministry of Climate and Environment.
