Today, 24 countries are producing geothermal power with a combined installed power generation capacity of 13,270 MW. With an additional aprox. 14,165 MW in development, that number could more than double in the coming years.

On popular request, we are herewith publishing our overview on all the countries with installed geothermal power generation capacity.

Today, there are 13,270 MW installed power generation capacity installed worldwide in 24 countries world-wide. With projects underway, the number could increase to 51, with an additional 14,165 MW to be installed.

With official statistics on the Global Geothermal Power Market provided by the International Geothermal Association (IGA) only on a 5-year basis, we are building our research and data on data compiled in these reports, as well as various national and international sources.

For the 2015 Global Geothermal Update – Power Generation, see: Bertani, R. “Geothermal Power Generation in the World 2012014 (2015)”, published in the Proceedings of the World Geothermal Congress 2015

Building on the data of this report, we maintain a database on all operating geothermal power plants and projects in development. For different countries we derive data from official websites, such as energy authorities, IEA and other sources.

Here some sources we are cross-referencing our data with:

For Portugal, this refers to installed capacity on the Azores Islands and the number for Guadeloupe (Bouillante plant) is often counted towards France, as it is a French territory in the Caribbean.
