In Indonesia, PT Geothermal Energy (PGE), a subsidiary of PT Pertamina is working on the implementation of eight  geothermal energy development projects of a combined geothermal power generation capacity of up to 685 MW.

The projects include:  Lumutbalai Units 1 & 2, Lumutbalai Units 3 & 4 in South Sumatra; Ulubelu Units 3 & 4 in Lampung; Kamojang Karaha Unit 1 and 5 in West Java; Lahendong Units 5 & 6 in North Sulawesi; Hulu Lais Units 1 & 2 in Bengkulu; Sunga Penuh Unit 1 at Jambi.

The overall investment for these projects is estimated at US$2.29 billion, or around $3.5 million per MW. Most of the funding for the projects will come directly from Pertamina. For Ulubelu, Lumut Balai and Lahendong, financing is also to come from soft loans.

Pertamina has started construction this summer for the Kamojang Unit 5 in East Java and is expected to complete by August 2015, according to Ardiansyah, Director of PGE. With exploration to take about 3 years, overall development is expected to take 5-8 years.

The Ulubelu Unit 3 project is currently in a tender process for the EPC contracts.

Currently, Pertamina Geothermal has an installed geothermal power generation capacity of 402 MW from the Lahendong units, Kamojang Units, as well as the units at Sibayak and ULubelu. Pertamina is planning to increase its power generation capacity to 2,300 MW by 2025, representing about 27 percent of the 8,600 MW geothermal power generation capacity in Indonesia planned by the government.
