A recent well drilled by PT Pertamina Geothermal Energy proves geothermal reserves at the company's project at Hululais, Bengkulu, Indonesia.

Reported last week, “PT Pertamina Geothermal Energy, has proven new geothermal reserves on the project site at the Hululais field at Bengkulu. The expected production capacity is about 5 MW electric.

The company’s Hululais Project is located in Lebong, Bengkulu Province, about 180 km from the city of Bengkulu. The HLS -1 well, located in Cluster C of the Hululais project is one of several wells that have been drilled in Hululais field with directional drilling depth of 3,000 MKU.

The project, which has a planned start of operation in 2014 is to supply steam for power generation with a capacity of 2 x 55 MWem, using water-dominated reservoir type with a peak temperature of 287 degrees Celsius.

“This project will generate power from geothermal resources and is very reliable to help overcome the shortage of electricity energy needs in Bengkulu and surrounding areas,” Pertamina VP of corporate communications Ali Mundakir, said in Jakarta last week.

PGE is engaged in the management and operation of geothermal energy power facilities and has an installed geothermal power generation capacity of 292 MWe at geothermal fields in Kamojang, Lahendong, and Sibayak.

The company is also currently undertaking geothermal exploration work in various areas such as Ulubelu in Lampung, Lumut-Balai in South Sumatra, Sungai Penuh – Jambi, Karaha-West Java and Kotamobagu in South Sulawesi.

PGE is targeting to reach an overall geothermal power generation capacity of approximately 1,322 MWe by 2015.

“The growth of Pertamina’s geothermal projects is the most aggressive initiative going forward. It is our commitment to improve the utilization of new and renewable energy which the country is very rich of,” Ali said.
