South African firm HRP Geopower believes that South Africa ignores its geothermal potential and believes to be able to build a 30 MW project at competitive pricing to currently preferred solar and wind projects in the country.

The geothermal potential of South Africa has been ignored and there has been too much focus to solar and wind energy as the only renewable energy options for the country. So a geologist of HRP GeoPower in a recent article in a South African paper.

The country faces the need for clean base-load power, something that geothermal energy could provide to South Africa.

HRP GeoPower believes that it “could set up a 30 MW plant based on binary technology”, but states the problem that “there is no legislation covering geothermal making it difficult to get permits, licenses and so forth.”
