Taipower and CPC plan geothermal development in Yilan, northeastern Taiwan

State-owned Taiwan Power Co. (Taipower) and oil refiner CPC Corp. have kicked off a partnership on the development of an 8 MW geothermal power project in Yilan County, in northeastern Taiwan.
As reported this morning, state-owned Taiwan Power Co. (Taipower) and oil refiner CPC Corp. have announced a partnership to explore geothermal development in Yilan County in northeastern Taiwan.
The companies held a ceremony to mark the beginning of exploration on site of the planned Renze No.3 geothermal well in Yilan. The plan is to drill a total of six exploration wells in Renze and neighbouring Tuchang before June 2021.
CPC Chairman Tai Chein said the exploration project, estimated to develop a 8 MW geothermal power plant if successful, will be developed in three stages. The first stage involves drilling of two 1,500 meter deep wells at an estimated cost of NT$130 million (US$4.23 million), one production well and the other as re-injection well. With that doublet it is expected to be able to generate about 2 MW, if the exploration is successful.
With the geothermal project utilising the Renze and Tuchang resources, the hope is to provide a stable source of electricity for Yilan County’s Datung Township, CPC said.
Both companies are also planning joint exploration for geothermal development in the volcanic area of Datunshan in Taipei in 2021, according to CPC.
