Taiwan is developing a geothermal power plant project at Yilang Chingshui, with two ORC units by Pratt & Whitney's PureCycle system to generate 500kW of power.

In news from Taiwan, it is reported that “two modular Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) units are going to be installed in Yilan County with the capacity to generate up to 500 kW of geothermal power, the Pratt & Whitney company said.

The Taiwan Yilang Chingshui Geothermal Project is expected to be operational by the end of the year. In this installation, existing low temperature geothermal resources of about 130 degrees Celsius will be used to fuel two PureCycle systems and generate 500 kW of net power. The project is managed by Global Power Source Company (GPSC) and YANKEE Power & Energy Saving Technology (YPEST). The PureCycle power systems will allow the geothermal project to produce electrical power for the first time in 25 years.

“Taiwan has demonstrated a strong commitment to developing its geothermal resources to help meet the region’s energy needs,” said Chuck Levey, Pratt & Whitney Vice President of Sales and Marketing.

“There is an energy shortage in Taiwan and geothermal energy is an important source of renewable power,” said Bering Wang, president of GPSC, which is the turnkey provider for the project. “The system uses low and medium temperature hot water to generate electrical power and replaces the traditional steam generator units operating with higher temperature steam, which caused the closure of a geothermal power plant at the site in the past.”
