The North Ireland Department for the Economy has published a tender for a geothermal demonstrator project including feasibility for deep and shallow geothermal.

North Ireland’s Department for the Economy is seeking a Contractor for a geothermal demonstrator project comprised of an overarching Communications and Marketing Project and two feasibility studies – one for a shallow geothermal system and one for a deep geothermal system.

The estimated total value for the contract is GBP 2.7 million. Interested bidders must register at www.eTendersNI.gov.uk and submit all required documents by 8 December 2022 15:00 GMT. The official tender document can be accessed via this link.

The two geothermal exploratory and feasibility studies will be used to better understand the subsurface and identify sites to drill and install one shallow geothermal system and one deep geothermal system. The feasibility study for the shallow geothermal project will be based on the Stormont Estate, while the deep geothermal feasibility study will be based in Greenmount College in County Antrim.

Data from the feasibility studies will be used to demonstrate that a viable geothermal heat resource is accessible at depth. This will encourage private investment and inform the development of a policy and regulatory framework that supports and promotes opportunities to unlock North Ireland’s geothermal energy potential.

Earlier this year, researchers at Queen’s University in Belfast released a report on building the geothermal sector in North Ireland. The report also described geothermal as a key component in helping North Ireland achieve its net-zero emission goals.
