The island of São Miguel, in the Azores archipelago (Portugal) , will host the second edition of the Geo-RIN (Geothermal Research and Innovation Network) Conference , to be held from March 9 to 12, 2027, at the Ponta Delgada Campus of the University of the Azores (UAc) . The event will once again bring together the geothermal community of Spain and Portugal to promote research, innovation, and cooperation in the development of geothermal energy.

Registration for Geo-RIN 2027 is now open. Those interested can view the different registration options and complete their registration through the event’s official website.

Contributions may address, among other topics, shallow and deep geothermal systems, heating and cooling, underground thermal storage, integration of geothermal energy in urban environments, reuse of oil and gas wells, utilization of flooded mines, industrial applications, recovery of critical raw materials from geothermal brines, and economic, regulatory, and social aspects of geothermal development.
The leading forum for geothermal energy in the Iberian region
Following the success of its first edition, held in Benasque, Spain in 2015 , Geo-RIN returns with the aim of establishing itself as the leading Iberian forum for scientific, technological, and business exchange in geothermal energy. The conference will bring together researchers, professionals, companies, and students, providing a platform to share knowledge, present the latest scientific and technological advances, analyze industry trends, and strengthen collaboration between universities, research centers, and industry.
The technical program will address some of the main challenges and opportunities for the sector, including the exploration and characterization of shallow and deep geothermal systems, conventional and next-generation geothermal technologies (EGS and AGS), heating and cooling, underground thermal energy storage (UTES), innovative applications of geothermal energy, integration with other energy systems, and the use of geothermal resources in the urban environment.
The congress will also dedicate significant space to the economic, social, and regulatory aspects of geothermal development, addressing topics such as project financing, business models, risk management, public policies, regulatory frameworks, governance, social participation, and communication—factors that are increasingly relevant to promoting the development of new geothermal projects.
In addition to the technical sessions, Geo-RIN 2027 will offer a wide range of complementary activities including specialized workshops, short courses, round tables, technology demonstrations, technical visits, field trips and networking activities , promoting the exchange of experiences between the scientific community and the industrial sector.
The scientific committee brings together specialists from leading institutions such as the University of the Azores , LNEG , University of Aveiro , University of Lisbon , University of Beira Interior , IGME-CSIC , CSIC , Delft University of Technology , as well as companies and specialized organizations in the geothermal sector.

The largest island in the Azores is one of the most important geothermal areas in Europe and an international leader in harnessing this resource for electricity generation, thanks to its volcanic origin and decades of experience in developing geothermal projects.
