Reuters informs that Quantam Power East Africa, Orpower Twenty Two and Sosian Energy will each develop a geothermal plant, adding 105 MW in Kenya and are expected to invest $300 million USD.

A recent news piece by Reuters details that 3 firms have been selected an will spend a grand total of $300 million USD for geothermal develpment in Kenya, aiming at adding 105 MW of power to the grid by the end of 2015.

Reuters also mentions that the country is rich in geothermal resources, aiming at increasing to increase the power generated to 5,000 MW from 1,700 MW at the moment.

The same source details, that “Silas Simiyu, managing director of the state-run Geothermal Development Company (GDC), said Quantam Power East Africa, Orpower Twenty Two and Sosian Energy would each develop a power plant with an output of 35 MW in Kenya’s Rift Valley.”

Regarding the financing of the plants will be done by the three independent power producers.

On a country that primarily relies on hydro power, diversifying into geothermal is a critical strategic move.
