Tunisia boosting geothermal heating of greenhouses

Alexander Richter 23 Dec 2009

Tunisia plans to expand geothermally heated greenhouse acreage from 194,000 hectars to 310 hectares in 2010.

From time to time I also want to post something on larger scale direct use applications, so I found this news piece quite interesting.

According to the article, “Tunisia has launched a nationwide program to use geothermal resources to heat and irrigate its greenhouses, initially in place since 1986.

It is estimated that 194,000 hectares are currently dedicated to geothermal farming.

The 2009-2014 Presidential program is planning to double that surface to reach 310,000 hectares in 2010.

Approximately 95% of the thermal water is used for irrigation of oases and heating greenhouses namely in the region Kebili, South Tunisia.

The total area of heated greenhouses in the country has considerably increased to reach 103,000 hectares, 44% of which are located in the south of the country.”
