The Government of Weihai City in Shandong, China is set to commence a two-year exploration plan for geothermal resources in at least six high-potential sites.

The Municipal Government of Weihai City in Shandong Province, China is set to commence a 2-year geothermal exploration campaign to further understand the local geothermal resources and provide a scientific basis for further development and utilization. The campaign is planned to start by May 2024 and will continue to May 2026.

Based on preliminary geological data and the plan for Weihai City’s economic and social development, high-potential areas were identified for detailed studies – the Wenquan Tang geothermal field in Huancui District, Kunyu Mountain Area in Wendeng District, Qilitang-Daxi Valley Area, Dayingtang geothermal field, Hongshulantang geothermal field, and Xiaotang geothermal field.

The initiative is aligned with the Provincial Government’s support of geothermal an important component of implementing the dual-carbon strategy and facilitating a green, low-carbon, and high-quality development. Since 2023, the Provincial Government has formulated several measures to support the development and utilization of geothermal energy and encouraged exploration of geothermal resources.

Previous studies done in Shandong Province done by the Shandong Bureau of Coal Geology have identified four reserves of hot dry rock, which equal about 18.8 billion tonnes of standard coal.

Through the exploration campaign, the Municipal Government aims to provide a geological basis for the subsequent establishment of geothermal mining rights and provide data support for the scientific preparation of the “15th Five-Year Plan” Weihai City Mineral Resources Master Plan.”
