Vulcan Energy (Vulcan) has announced that civil construction work has started at the 30-MW geothermal power plant site in Landau, Germany as part of the Lionheart project. . The commercial site, sitting on approximately ten hectares, is under construction in the Messegelände Südost industrial park in Landau.
The current work includes the preparation and construction of key foundations and concrete works for the power plant buildings and equipment, and the buildout of the road infrastructure. The actual construction phase is scheduled to begin by 2027.
Located in the Upper Rhine Valley Brine Field between Germany and France, the Lionheart project involves the construction of an integrated lithium and renewable energy project. The facility is targeting a production of 24,000 tonnes of lithium hydroxide monohydrate (LHM) while co-producing 275 GWh of renewable power and 560 GWh of renewable heat per annum for local consumers.
Both the lithium extraction and the geothermal energy plants will be connected to a network of pipelines and cables (inter-connected pipelines and power, ICPP) transporting lithium brine and industrial water from the well sites to Landau and back to the well sites for underground re-injection. Civil works for the Lithium Extraction Plant are expected to begin later this year.
Meanwhile, drilling of new geothermal wells to serve the power plant and lithium extraction plant is ongoing, with a second drilling site expected to be operational by the 2nd half of 2026. The company has also started construction of the downstream lithium processing plant in Frankfurt which will convert lithium chloride to LHM.
