Presenting results of an early study on the potential for geothermal utilisationin Austria, a webinar on Oct. 28, 2020 by Austria's Geothermal Association will look into if development makes sense and how it can be incentivized.

The Geothermal Energy Association of Austria (Geothermie Österreich) is inviting to a webinar on October 28, 2020 16:00 to 17:00 (CEST). Theme of the event is “Does Geothermal Power make sense for Austria and how can it be supported?” The webinar will share the results of an early study on the potential for geothermal power generation in Austria.

The use of deep geothermal resources in the country is currently dominated by district heating. There are currently two geothermal power units in operation. In Altheim, a 1 MW capacity plant (with a total running capacity of 0.5 MW) started operation sin 2002. In Bad Blumau a small scale plant with a capacity of 0.25 MW is installed and started operation in 2001. Both plants are binary cycle plants.

Theme of the webinar

For nearly 20 years electricity has been generated in two locations in Austria, in Upper Austria and Styria. The annual production was around 3 GWh in 2019. Though, despite being part within the Austrian Green Electricity Act, geothermal energy has not been able to make a decisive contribution to the expansion of renewables in the country.

The geothermal resources known today would allow an expansion of development by a factor of 100 to 200.

In the course of drafting the Renewable Expansion Law (EAG), the Geothermal Austria Association therefore addressed the fundamental question of which barriers and possibilities  from a technical and economic perspective exist for expanding geothermal energy in Austria. The authors of the study to be presented come to the conclusion that particular in the context of combining geothermal power and heat production, geothermal energy could contribute greatly to decarbonize Austria’s electricity sector.

Crucial for the expansion of geothermal power generation in Austria is that there are effective investment incentives – these must be anchored accordingly in the EAG.
