Join this webinar with Dr. Niklas Geißler, of Fraunhofer IEG and Fraunhofer FCC, in this webinar on How Micro Turbine Drilling (MTD) offers new exploration possibilities for the geothermal industry.

As part of the regular IGC Webinar series – a partnership of Enerchange and ThinkGeoEnergy – we are proud to host this week’s presenter Dr. Niklas Geißler, from Fraunhofer IEG and Fraunhofer FCC, who will provide further insights on the recently established Micro Turbine Drilling (MTD) technology.

After the presentation you will have the opportunity to discuss and ask further questions.

As a mechanical engineer and due to his time at the International Geothermal Centre between 2014 and 2019, Niklas Geißler has already been involved in multiple projects related to geothermal, such as i.BOGS and drill.BOGS. His work on the development of the MTD technology began with his career at the Fraunhofer IEG in 2019 and 2020. While attaining his doctors degree in mechanical engineering between 2020 and 2023, Niklas Geißler also began working as a scientific employee at the Fraunhofer FCC in Sweden. Along with the MTD patent in 2021, he is now part of several industrial and public projects related to the MTD technology.

Within geothermal, drilling may often be associated with high exploration risk. Thereby, insufficient hydraulic connectivity of the reservoir may lead to low production rates and consequently poor efficiency. As a solution to this problem, Fraunhofer IEG has developed the innovative drilling technology Micro Turbine Drilling (MTD). By drilling additional branches from the main well – reffered to as “micro-sidetracks” – the connectivity can be improved significantly and thus raise the production capacity.
