Webinar – Superhot geothermal research in Iceland and drilling of IDDP-3, 29 May 2026
Join us on 29 May 2026 for a webinar on the work being done in the field of superhot geothermal in Iceland and the drilling plans for the IDDP-3 well.
As part of the regular Focus on Geothermal Webinar series – a partnership of Enerchange and ThinkGeoEnergy, we are proud to host Sigurdur Markusson of Reykjavik Energy for a webinar on “IDDP-3: The next superhot geothermal well in Iceland.” Further details are as follows:
Date: 29 May 2026
Time: 16:00 CET / 10:00 ET

Speaker: Sigurdur Markusson, Program leader for superhot geothermal at Reykjavik Energy
Iceland is one of the countries at the forefront of research in superhot geothermal development. Through the Iceland Deep Drilling Project (IDDP) and drilling of the IDDP-1 and IDDP-2 wells in 2009 and 2017, respectively, geothermal fluids at supercritical conditions have already been intersected at depth. However, critical challenges remain to allow for its commercial utilization.
The upcoming webinar will cover the further development of superhot geothermal in Iceland and the plans for the drilling of the IDDP-3 well, which is scheduled for late 2026.

About the speaker
Sigurdur Markusson holds a Master’s degree in Geochemistry from the University of Iceland and a masters dergree in Sustainability Leadership from the University of Cambridge. He has spent over 15 years working in the renewable energy sector, with extensive experience in geothermal research, project development, and business development.
He had worked previously with Landsvirkjun (The National Power Company of Iceland) and now is at Reykjavik Energy, where he leads the companies effort in superhot geothermal with the aim of drilling for 400 to 500 ºC geothermal wells for power generation.
