An alternative location is being evaluated for a geothermal project in Waldsee, Germany after geopfalz was unable to acquire enough land for the original site.

geopfalz GmbH & Co. KG (geopfalz) is currently considering alternative locations for the planned geothermal project in the city of Waldsee in the Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany. The company had previously been eyeing a site in the “In den Fahrgärten” mixed-use development area, but was unable to acquire sufficient land for the future drilling and plant operations. A suitable location is now being examined in the area around the Wolfgangsee.

First announced in 2024, the geothermal project proposed in Waldsee seeks to implement an innovative drilling strategy as part of the agEns demonstration project. Funded by the  Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Protection (BMWK), the project aims to permanently minimize seismic risks and increase profitability of geothermal drilling operations.

The company implementing the project, geopfalz, is a subsidiary of Stadtwerke Speyer GmbH and the city of Schifferstadt. In this sub-project, geopfalz will create the first deep geothermal doublet, a basic building block for geothermal heat supply, for the inter-municipal geothermal project “Rhein-Pfalz”.

As things stand, the drilling phase is scheduled to begin in the fourth quarter of 2026 and last a year and a half. Regular operations are scheduled to begin in spring 2030, following completion of the above-ground facilities. All plans are subject to adjustments as the project progresses.

A commitment to clear communication

Geopfalz places great importance on dialogue with citizens and political decision-makers. Various formats have been employed in the past to provide early, transparent, and open communication to the public.

Geopfalz seeks to continue this communication with a public information event open to the residents of Waldsee on 1 September 2025. Experts will be available to answer questions about geothermal energy, geology, drilling, and plant technology. The event offers space for an open and respectful exchange.

“We want to talk with each other, not about each other,” said managing directors Claire Weihermüller and Jörg Uhde.
