BLM will be conducting a geothermal lease sale for two parcels in Millford County, Utah on 24 January 2023.

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) has announced a geothermal lease sale for to parcels of land in Millard County, Utah, totaling 3045 acres. The lease sale will be on 24 January 2023. The maps of the parcels, environmental documents, and attached stipulations are available thru this link.

Both parcels are within the Fishlake National Forest, where subsurface minerals are managed by the BLM Fillmore Field Office. The Forest Service had previously released an environmental assessment for the parcels  and signed the decision record and finding of no significant impact in May 2022. The environmental assessment can be accessed at the Forest Service’s website.

On Aug. 12, 2022, the BLM received the Forest Service’s consent to lease these two parcels. In accordance with the National Environmental Policy Act, the BLM is adopting the Forest Service’s environmental assessment.

Geothermal lease sales by BLM are part of the efforts of the Biden-Harris Administration to attain a carbon pollution-free power sector by 2035, as well as Congress’ direction in the Energy Act of 2020 to permit 25 GW of solar, wind, and geothermal production on public lands no later than 2025. The recent geothermal lease sale in Nevada, where 66 parcels received bids, was the most successful that the BLM has conducted thus far.
