EGEC has announced a call for projects presentation for the EGEC Innovation Fund Workshop on Geothermal Energy, that could be presenting

In an announcement, the European Geothermal Energy Council (EGEC) has announced an Innovation Fund Workshop on Geothermal Energy with a Call for project presentations (deadline: Friday, 30th August 2019)

What is the purpose of this workshop?

This workshop is organized with the objective to present as many projects that could benefit from the first call of the Innovation Fund, to be issue in 2020, as possible.

EGEC is therefore calling its members, members of the ETIP DG and the actors of the geothermal industry to express their interest if they would like to present a project to the European Commission on the 23rd September. The project presented will be part of a preliminary database of project susceptible to receive support from the Fund. More importantly, a wide presentation of different type of geothermal technologies and project is crucial to give precise and relevant information about the needs of the geothermal industry from such financing scheme as the Innovation Fund.

What is the Innovation Fund?

The Innovation Fund is a European Financing programme that stems from the EU ETS, which aims to invest part of the revenues from the European carbon trading scheme to the development of innovative clean energy technologies. The Innovation Fund replaces the NER300. It has a wider scope than its predecessor (with notably a greater focus on energy intensive industries and energy storage) and a larger budget. There remains some need for clarification as to the mechanisms through which funding will be awarded to projects.
The NER300 awarded funding in the form of grants that had to be repayed should the project fail, which made it an instrument that was not aligned with the economics of deep geothermal projects. The Innovation Fund is likely to continue this model, however, discussions are open as to the possibility to award funds to projects by different means, for instance different types of grants or through financial instruments.
