For the first time, geothermal power generation assets have been added into a virtual power plant in Turkey. Utilising German technology, this allows company Pure Energy to monitor, control and market geothermal power on dynamic day-ahead and intraday markets.

News this week reported that, geothermal power generation assets with a combined power generation capacity of 103 MW have been added to a Virtual Power Plant operated by Turkish company Pure Energy.

With that Pure Energy, became the first Turkish operator of a virtual power plant. Pure Energy and German energy & meteo systems, a leading provider of solar and wind power forecasts as well as virtual power plants, have reached its next milestone in their collaboration: The first geothermal systems with an installed capacity of 103 MW were recently included in the Turkish energy supplier’s portfolio added. The virtual power plant with wind, solar and water power plants has been operated in Turkey for three years.

Turkey is one of the world’s largest producers of energy from geothermal systems and is steadily expanding its share of the energy supply. Pure Energy and energy & meteo systems have now paved the way for the integration of the first systems into the existing virtual power plant.

Pure Energy has been using the virtual power plant from energy & meteo systems since 2017 to bundle wind, solar and hydropower plants. This first and so far only virtual power plant in Turkey enables Pure Energy to monitor, remotely control and optimally market the energy produced by the connected systems. By integrating geothermal systems, their production can now also be marketed on the dynamic Turkish day-ahead and intraday markets. This optimizes the portfolio management of Pure Energy and, at the same time, the plant operators can benefit from lower balancing energy costs.
