The previously terminated geothermal heating project in Bad Bevensen, Germany has been given a second life with a new development partner.

The geothermal heating project in the city of Bad Bevensen in Lower Saxony, Germany is again being developed under a newly founded project company with NULLCOZWEI GmbH as development partner. This is a major reversal for the proposed geothermal project which had already been voted against by the city council earlier this year, citing too high project implementation costs.

“With today’s signing, a new chapter begins for Bad Bevensen,” said Steffen Krause, Managing Director of Nullcozwei GmbH. “We are combining municipal responsibility and technical expertise to implement a showcase project for sustainable heat supply in rural areas.”

In 2023, Bad Bevensen was one of two municipalities that were selected by the State of Lower Saxony to receive a conditionally repayable grant for a geothermal pilot project. The following year, a new company was founded to lead the geothermal development efforts, called Renewable Energies Bad Bevensen GmbH (Erneuerbare Energien Bad Bevensen GmbH). However, the city council decided on a slim 13-12 vote that the project was too expensive for the city and that the payback period of about 20 years was too long.

Under the newly signed contract between the city and Nullcozwei, the company will be responsible for both the subsurface development and the construction of the modern district heating network. The plan is to supply geothermal heat to hospitals, municipal buildings, a thermal spa, and a school. With the preliminary work done previously, the next step will be to conduct seismic surveys and plan the drilling. Work is expected to start as early as fall 2025.

“Thanks to the years of preparatory work by the city and the Gesellschaft für erneuerbare Energien Bad Bevensen GmbH, we are in the best position to successfully continue this project,” commented Krause.

“Looking back at the town’s history, we all know how significant the development of the thermal springs in 1964 was and still is for Bad Bevensen. Now, it would be negligent to miss the opportunity to utilize these springs for heat supply,” added Martin Felle, City Director.

“Therefore, I am all the more pleased that Nullcozwei GmbH will continue this important and groundbreaking project. We will support this venture to the best of our ability.”
