Greece publishes list of geothermal sites of local and national interest
The Ministry of Energy of Greece has published new documents identifying geothermal fields of local and national interest with indicative technical parameters.
The Ministry of Energy and Environment (YPEN) of Greece has published two Ministerial Decision documents that identify 14 geothermal fields of local interest, and one geothermal field of national interest. The classification was done by the competent department of YPEN in cooperation with the competent department of the Hellenic Survey for Geology & Mining Research (EAGME). Both documents have been published in the Government Gazette.
Ministerial Decision YPEN/DAP/142903/684/17-12-2025 identifies the 14 following geothermal fields of local interest:
- Thermae Nigrita, Serres
- Sidirokastro, Serres
- Sousaki, Corinthia
- Stypsi, Lesvos
- Santorini Island
- Lichades, Evia
- Nea Appolonia, Thessaloniki
- Antirrio, Aetolia-Acarnania
- Akropotamos, Kavala
- Iraklia-Lithotopos, Serres
- Aetos, Florina
The document summarizes the known technical data for each site, including estimates of resource temperature, flowrates, and reservoir depths. Demarcation points for each geothermal field are also specified.
A second Ministerial Decision (Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources/DAP/142809/683/16.12.2025) further identifies the Stypsi geothermal field in Lesvos as a geothermal field of national interest. This is based one the new framework and data from PPC Renewables, which holds the exploration and exploitation rights for the site. Based on existing data, the geothermal resource in Stypsis has a temperature above 90 °C at a reservoir depth of 250 to 600 meters.
Early exploration work has already done in the Stypsi site by PPC Renewables. In 2024, the company announced plans of building a pilot 250-kW power plant in Stypsis as a prelude to a planned 8-MW geothermal power station.
