GT Energy and E.On sign MOU on geothermal district heating in the UK

Energy company E.On and Ireland-based GT Energy sign agreement to jointly develop geothermal district heating plants, starting with a project in the Northwest of England later this year.
Reported from the UK this morning, one of the UK’s largest energy companies E.On and Ireland-based geothermal technology firm GT Energy have signed a memorandum of understanding on a cooperation to jointly develop a range of urban geothermal heating plants.
While there are no further details available at this point, both companies expect to start on the first project in the Northwest of England before the end of 2012.
E.On – so the article – is already one of the leading providers of district heating systems, and hopes to strengthen its position even more.
“E.ON is a recognised leader in the delivery of district heating schemes and I’m delighted to be working with GT Energy to design, build and operate the district energy network as well as helping the customers who connect,” said Michael Woodhead, managing director of E.ON’s Sustainable Energy business in a statement.
“Schemes like these help us reduce our carbon emissions and can help cut customer bills. This scheme is just one of a number that we are delivering across the UK and is part of our commitment to change the way energy is created and used in the UK.”
