The lle-de-France region, which includes Greater Paris, is looking at nearly doubling the use of geothermal energy for heating as part of larger renewable energy plans.

The Ile-de-France region in France is looking at doubling its use of geothermal energy for district heating as part of a larger plan to derive 50% of all heating from renewable sources. Only 5 percent of the region’s energy comes currently from renewable energy sources and the government has set a goal of 23 percent by 2020.

The region is betting on geothermal and biomass for heating. The greater Paris region has geothermal potential and today uses geothermal energy for heating. The government sees the potential of doubling the current use of geothermal.

There is financial support for the region and companies interested in such projects, with an estimated funding at EUR 20 million ($26 million) per year, with additional funds from European funds of up to EUR 13 million ($17 million).

The Ile-de-France region in the heart of France, is one of twenty seven administrative regions of France with Paris and other large municipalities.
