Indonesian government exploration drilling program to start on three areas in 2021
As part of a new exploration program to derisk geothermal projects, the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources plans to start at three locations in West Java, South Sulawesi, and East Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia with a slim well drilling program.
As reported locally, the Indonesian Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) will start an exploration drilling program in three locations of geothermal working areas (WKP) next year. The three locations are WKP Cisolok Cisukarame in West Java, WKP Bituang in South Sulawesi, and WKP Nage in East Nusa Tenggara.
The Head of the Geological Agency of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, Eko Budi Lelono, said that geothermal exploration drilling was carried out in order to provide more accurate geothermal working area data before being offered to business entities.
“In 2021, we will drill in three locations so that it is hoped that the data will be more complete and can attract investors to carry out activities there,” he said at a hearing with Commission VII of the Indonesian Parliament, Monday, November 30, 2020.
To improve the quality of the WKP data, the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources will conduct exploration drilling of two wells each with a small diameter (slim hole).
The exploration stage is the stage with the greatest risk of failure. Exploration drilling by the government (government drilling) is expected to increase the interest of investors in developing geothermal.
