Mexico City will host the Latin America Geothermal Systems Workshop 2026 on 2-3 September 2026, the first workshop of the American Association of Petroleum Geologists (AAPG) dedicated specifically to exploring the potential of advanced and unconventional geothermal systems in Latin America.

The meeting will take place at the Barceló México Reforma and will bring together geoscientists, engineers, energy industry specialists, academics, business development professionals and government representatives to analyze new opportunities for geothermal energy in the region.
Under the motto “Exploring Sustainable Solutions to Meet the Region’s Energy Demand” , the program will combine keynote lectures, panel discussions, technical presentations and networking sessions, with a particular focus on technologies and development models that allow the scope of geothermal energy to be extended beyond conventional systems.
The potential of advanced geothermal systems
One of the main focuses of the workshop will be the development of Enhanced Geothermal Systems (EGS) and other advanced geothermal systems, as well as the technologies needed to identify, characterize, develop and optimize these resources.
The program includes sessions on geological considerations for project viability , technologies for implementing and optimizing advanced geothermal systems, cases of geothermal energy co-production in Latin America, and the lithium potential associated with co-production systems. Experiences from projects developed in the United States and Canada will also be analyzed, along with the technologies available for non-traditional geothermal systems and the opportunities for applying these concepts in Latin America.
Mexico as a meeting point for Latin American geothermal energy
The agenda also reflects a growing convergence between the experience of the oil and gas industry and the development of new geothermal applications.
The program will feature the participation of specialists from government institutions, energy companies, universities, and technical organizations from Mexico, the United States, Canada, and other Latin American countries.
Among the highlighted topics are the potential of non-traditional geothermal projects in Latin America , as well as the reuse of existing wells for electricity generation, the co-production of oil and geothermal energy, and the exploitation of lithium associated with brines.
Geothermal energy and new energy opportunities
The workshop comes at a time of growing interest in expanding the applications of geothermal energy in Latin America, particularly through technologies capable of harnessing lower permeability resources, reusing existing infrastructure, and combining geothermal production with other energy and mining activities.
The development of EGS, advanced geothermal systems, and co-production projects could open new opportunities for countries with experience in hydrocarbon exploration and production, by allowing them to take advantage of some of the existing infrastructure, technical knowledge and professional capabilities.
The meeting also seeks to strengthen the exchange of knowledge between different disciplines and sectors, connecting the experience of the oil and gas industry with the new opportunities offered by advanced geothermal energy.
International participation includes professionals from technical associations, academic institutions, energy companies, and other actors linked to the development of geothermal energy in America and other regions.
