A new geothermal district heating plant and network has started operation in Dammerie-les-Lys, in the southeast of Paris/ France. With water of around 71 centigrades derived from a resource in 1,800m depth the system supplies heating to around 3,300 households.

In Dammarie-les-Lys in the Southeast of Paris, France – a new geothermal district heating project has officially started operation. As reported by Le Parisien, the project has drilled two wells to derive hot water.

With the project, the Dammarie-les-Lys is now not dependend on fuel and gas anymore, as it derives heating from a geothermal resource with a temperature of 71 degrees Celsius. The new heating plant provides heating and hot water of about 3,300 dwellings on the Plaine du Lys, René-Coty school, Georges-Politzer college, Jean-Boiteux swimming pool and soon Robert-Doisneau high school and Joliot-Curie high school.

The geothermal plant and its district heating network of 5 km were inaugurated over the weekend, not far from the location of a former oil – fired boiler. The project took about two years to be completed and an overall investment of EUR 26 million ($32 million)

“We drilled two wells to a dept of 1,800m where flows a source almost inexhaustible: the water of the Dogger, where the water is at 71 ° C,” says Grégoire Wintrebert, director of Géodalys, the operator.

With the new geothermal heating system in place, emissions of about 7,000 tons of CO 2 in the air per year are saved,” says Michel Gioria, director of Ademe Ile-de-France.

There is a further advantage, namely financial savings for the inhabitants. “Our charges are expected to drop, thanks to a 5.5% VAT on geothermal energy that should be passed on by our lessor, Housing Francilien, smiles Ali Kameche, representative of the tenants and administrator of the National Housing Confederation (CNL). This is all the more significant as the heating and hot water costs are very important so far: EUR 151.90 per month for an F 4 apartment for example, or 23% of the overall rent payment. ”

These savings and improved air quality have helped residents to accept the nuisance of the site for two years. “They understood that it was for a good cause,” says Ali Kameche.

“I really believe in geothermal energy,” says Gilles Battail (LR), the mayor. “The potential is underused in Ile-de-France, regrets Jean-Philippe Dugoin-Clément (UDI), Vice President of the region in charge of the Environment. This is why we will continue to financially support the development of this type of project. ”
