Philippines' Basic Energy Corp. (BEC) will start to conduct geothermal studies in Batangas in preparation for its planned drilling project starting in the first quarter 2010.

Reported in local news, “Basic Energy Corp. (BEC) will start to conduct geothermal studies in Batangas in preparation for its planned drilling project.

In a statement, it said geothermal studies in the Mabini site will be conducted within the first quarter of the year. Drilling will commence as soon as it has collated the results of geophysics and geological studies in the area.

“BEC will maintain its participation in existing exploration projects. [There are] no plans as of yet to increase participation or to join other exploration projects,” the company said.

BEC pointed out that it will focus its efforts this year on renewable energy, including its geothermal project.

“For 2010, BEC will concentrate on its geothermal project as far as the RE (renewable energy) sector is concerned,” it said.

The company also plans to develop alternative fuels such as ethanol this year. This, as its unit EcoMarket Farms Inc. (BEF) is expected to put up a bioethanol plant in Mindanao.“
