Turkey to push for 30% of renewables by 2023

Turkey to push for 30% of renewables by 2023 Dora 2 Geothermal Power Plant, Turkey

With a planned total of 4,000 MW renewable energy power generation capacity by 2023, geothermal energy will present more than 15% of that by the time.

Turkey’s economy grows and so does the energy demand. In order to address this, local sources quote “Energy and Natural Resources Minister Taner said that Turkey would add 4,000 megawatts to its electricity production capacity this year, 95 percent of which will be provided through local and renewable resources. Turkey’s installed electricity capacity had reached 69,520 megawatts as of 2014 and the government aims to increase the share of local and renewable sources in electricity production to 30 percent by 2023, he said.”

It should be noted that the vast majority correspondes to hydro, but geothermal has seen great growth in the past decade. With power generation capacity at around 400 MW today, geothermal energy plays a fundamental role in the push of Turkey for renewable energy. This is in itself a great feat, which is also motivated behind the high prices of oil and other fossil fuels in Turkey since the country has to import them. This, alongside the liberalization of the energy market in the country have triggered an expansion and constant increment in the energy supply.
