The planned geothermal project in Vogtlandkreis in Saxony, Germany, will be pushing ahead with a seismic survey planned from April to May 2024.

From April to May 2024, seismic measurements will be conducted in in the Schönbrunn region of Vogtlandkreis, Germany as part of a geothermal evaluation campaign. This will then be followed by further exploration by the State Office for Environment, Agriculture, and Geology.

The Vogtlandkreis is aspiring to be the first district in the State of Saxony to establish a geothermal power facility somewhere between Bösenbrunn, Schönbrunn, and Planschwitz. Plans for the geothermal project were first announced in July 2023, with the corresponding contracts awarded after about a month. Based on existing data, thermal waters at 120 °C are expected at depths of around 3 kilometers. If all goes to plan, the construction of a geothermal power plant can begin by the end of 2025.

“With this project, we have launched an ambitious plan for a modern and future-proof energy supply in the district,” said District Administrator Thomas Hennig (CDU). “In this way, we not only benefit from the beauty of our homeland, but also from the treasures beneath us.”

In the next few years, the district plans to connect a third of its resident to a geothermal district heating network. Potentially around 80,000 residents in the district can benefit from geothermal heating and possibly even electricity in 5 to 10 years.
